Apple rolls out new Mac Pro, Xserve models

January 8, 2008 - Apple introduced new models of the Mac Pro and Xserve Tuesday, one week ahead of Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

The new Mac Pro carries a higher price for the standard configuration, which starts at $2,799, but comes equipped with eight cores, previously a custom option that cost $1,499 on its own.

The Mac Pro features Intel's new 45nm Xeon 5400 series processor. The architecture includes a faster 1.6GHz system bus, and 12MB of L2 cache per processor, three times more than previous systems. The new Mac Pro also supports twice as much RAM, up to 32GB.

Other improvements include 2GB (2x1GB) of RAM standard, PCIe 2.0 slots, built-in Bluetooth standard, and an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT video card with 256MB of memory and two dual-link DVI ports, supporting dual 30-inch displays out of the box.

Processor options include: single 2.8GHz quad-core, dual 2.8GHz quad-core, dual 3.0GHz quad-core, and dual 3.2GHz quad-core.

Video card upgrades include NVIDIA's GeForce 8800GT with 512MB of memory, and the Quadro FX 5600 with 1.5GB of memory.

Xserve January 2008

The Xserve at last enters the 8-core fray, although the standard configuration remains a quad-core model. Like the Mac Pro, the new Xserve also features Xeon 5400 quad-core processors, configured with one at 2.8GHz, two at 2.8GHz, or two at 3.0GHz.

The Xserve also benefits from other new technologies of the Xeon 5400, including the 1600MHz bus, support for 32GB of RAM, and PCIe 2.0 slots.

An 8x dual-layer SuperDrive is also now standard on the Xserve, while the front-mounted FireWire 400 port has been replacedd with a USB 2.0 port. The Xserve also sees its power supply bumped from 650W to 750W.

The standard Xserve remains priced at $2,999.
