Apple announces MacBook Air, iTunes Movie Rentals, more
January 15, 2008 - SAN FRANCISCO—Apple CEO Steve Jobs delivered a number of announcements at his keynote address that kicked off Macworld Expo this morning, including:
- The MacBook Air, which includes a 13.3-inch LED-backlit display, backlit keyboard, 1.6GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive (or a 64GB solid state drive for an additional $999), five hours of battery life, no optical drive, and an enclosure that is 0.16-inches thick at its thinnest point, starting at $1,799 and shipping in two to three weeks
- iTunes Movie Rentals, offering movies from all of the major movie studios priced at $2.99 for library titles, $3.99 for new releases, and high-definition versions for an additional dollar
- Time Capsule, a "backup appliance" that wirelessly backs up Macs using Time Machine, shipping in February for $299 for a 500GB hard drive and $499 for a 1TB drive
- A free software update for the Apple TV that enables users to rent movies from iTunes directly from their TV, without using their Mac. Apple also lowered the price of the Apple TV to $299
- A software update to the iPhone that enables users to pinpoint their location, send text messages to multiple recipients, and customize the home screen. Apple also announced that it is offering Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather, and Notes to current iPod touch customers for a fee of $20.
